Could your business survive if you vanished today?

That is the question Katrina Purcell asked in my recent appearance on the Managed Chaos Podcast — and it comes straight from the Kidnap Test in Sweat Equity Payday.

The idea is simple: If the owner suddenly becomes unreachable, does the business keep moving? Or does everything stop because payroll, sales, customers, vendors, approvals, and decision-making all still run through one person?

That is owner dependency. And owner dependency is one of the biggest threats to business value.

In the episode, Katrina and I talked about why buyers do not just look at revenue and profit. They look at whether the business is transferable.

  • Can the team operate without the owner?

  • Are customer relationships spread across the company?

  • Are vendor relationships documented?

  • Are the books clean?

  • Are there systems, processes, and people in place — or is the owner still the human operating system?

This was a fun and very practical conversation about what makes a business more valuable, more durable, and ultimately more sellable.

Thanks to Katrina and the Managed Chaos Podcast for having me on.

You only sell your business once. Make it count.
